Another Man Flies Through the Sky in a Lawn Chair

Following in the footsteps (lawn chair?) of Larry Walters from 1982, Kent Couch, a forty-seven-year-old gas station owner in Oregon, attached a large cluster of helium-filled balloons to a lawn chair and floated off into the sky. Couch took with him on his nine-hour joyride a GPS device, an altimeter, a speedometer, four water-holding plastic bags to serve as ballast, a video recorder, some snacks, and a parachute. When he landed, Couch had traveled approximately 193 miles.

“It was beautiful — beautiful,” Mr. Couch said of the experience.

This was Couch’s second time that he has gone cluster ballooning. The first time was last September when he was airborne for six hours. Couch hopes to do it again in the future.
