Russians Get a Day Off to Procreate

The Russian region of Ulyanovsk has a interesting way of encouraging couples to have more children; for the third straight year, it has declared September 12 to be the “Day of Conception.” What that means is that couples are given the day off from work in order to, um, make babies. The purpose is to fight off the nation’s birth rate decline.

There are incentives for participating too (besides the obvious). Those Russian couples who give birth to a child exactly nine months later on June 12 (the country’s day of independence) will be able to win money and prizes, including refrigerators, washing machines, videos cameras, television sets, and — the grand prize — a sport utility vehicle.

Not surprisingly, this gimmick has helped improve the birth rate for two years running.
