Substance abuse has become a big problem in the sports world — not just in baseball and not just in the U.S.
Martina Hingis, the former World No. 1 tennis star, has been banned from playing professionally for two years after having tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon this past year. Hingis claims that she is “100% innocent,” although I cannot conceive of how that could be when a metabolite of cocaine was found in her system.
Although Hingis will have to give back all prize money that she was won since Wimbledon, the actual playing ban won’t affect her since he retired from the sport back in November due to the drug allegations and her many tennis-related injuries.
I have been a Hingis fan for quite a while (her sharp tongue notwithstanding). She was the youngest person to ever win a Wimbledon championship, and her career included five Grand Slam singles titles and ten Grand Slam doubles titles. It is a shame that her professional career has come to an end with a black mark like this.
