Even though the United States may be unable to respond militarily against the Russian Federation’s unjust attack on the neighboring country of Georgia, I am proud that President Bush made it amply clear that Russia’s invasion will not be tolerated.
“Russia has invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatens a democratic government elected by its people. Such an action is unacceptable in the twenty-first century,” the President said in a statement today at the White House after returning from Beijing. “Russia’s government must respect Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. … These actions have substantially damaged Russia’s standing in the world. And these actions jeopardize Russia’s relations with the United States and Europe.”
I hope the U.S. continues to put pressure on the Russian government to reverse its course in Georgia.

I wouldn’t classify Russia as ever having been a “buddy”. The Bush administration has certainly attempted to influence the country by means of cordial diplomatic relations, but I think that Russia’s current actions have soured any prior warm feelings.
